Brandywine Valley Scenic Byway May 23rd 05 was a day of celebration, when all parties joined together to dedicate the newly formed Brandywine Scenic Byway in Chester and Delaware Counties. Under the directives of the National Scenic Byways Program; The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation dedicated roads of “Intrinsic Quality, archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic features that are considered representative, unique, irreplaceable, or distinctly characteristic of an area". Pennsylvania Byways are designated in support of local planning efforts to: enhance and improve the visual impact of specific routes; maintain the natural resource and intrinsic qualities along specific routes and educate residents and visitors on the history and culture of the Commonwealth. The Brandywine Scenic Byway joins hands at the Delaware Border, with the Delaware State Scenic Byway overlay on Route 52. Upon developing a corridor management plan, the Brandywine Scenic Byway Steering Committee shall seek Federal and State funding for maintenance and preservation of scenic, historical, recreational, cultural, natural and archaeological characteristics of the corridor. The inaugural township participants are: Birmingham, East Bradford, Chadds Ford, East Marlborough, Kennett, Pennsbury and Pocopson. Many surrounding municipalities have expressed interest in amending on to the Byway in the near future. The BVSB Steering Committee looks forward to executing the directives of designation in the near future through intergovernmental cooperative planning and implementation. We have received grants from Federal Highways, Chester County Tourist & Visitors Bureau and Senator Dinniman’s Office DCED funds. We plan to bid the Corridor Management Plan in the Spring of 2007.
