Tree Planting - Volunteers Needed

For some time, the East Bradford Township Green Committee, in concert with the Environmental Advisory Council and the Parks & Recreation Board, has been developing plans to plant trees in the Township.  Because of a change of plans for another site, we are fortunate to be the recipients of some 1,000 tree saplings.  This is part of the PA Horticultural Society “Tree Vitalize” program and we will get the saplings at no cost to the Township.  They will be planted at Shaw’s Bridge Park on Saturday, October 15, starting at 8:30 AM.  The rain date is the next day, Sunday, October 16 at the same starting time.

If you are interested in volunteering to be part of the team that helps plant the saplings at Shaw’s Bridge Park, you may contact the township office at 610-436-5108 during regular business hours to sign up or you may e-mail your name address and phone number to info@eastbradford.org to register.  Click here to download the waiver form that must be signed to participate in the tree planting.

There are a variety of tree types to be included in the planting.  All are suitable for planting in wet, riparian areas.  That is very appropriate because the park is located in a flood plain and from time to time, the trees will have very “wet feet.”

Shaw's Bridge Park is located at 274 South Creek Road, West Chester, PA 19382; located between Rt. 842 and Rt. 52/100.  The park is located at the confluence of the east and west branches of the Brandywine Creek and is just up stream from the Brandywine Picnic Park (old Lenape Park) and the DeLacy Soccer Fields.  Click here for a link to a map of the park.

Green Committee Library:

As the result of a generous donation of $250 from PECO, the Green Committee was able to purchase a set of books.  They are intended to provide township residents with information as to:

§         how to improve energy efficiency

§         save money

§         invest in and install renewable energy devices such as:

o          solar photovoltaic and/or solar hot water panels,

o          geothermal ground source heat pumps

§         and to select trees to plant on their property.  Trees and shrubs use carbon dioxide, water and photosynthesis to grow.  Therefore, they absorb carbon from our atmosphere and are good for the environment.

All the books are available at the Township Office.  A nominal $10.00 deposit is required for their removal on loan.  The deposit is fully refundable upon their return to the library.

See Tenley Adams or Nancy Holland, at the office to borrow one or more of the books.  They have a complete list of the book titles and summaries of the contents of each of them.

§         PECO has a “Smart Ideas Website” at www.pecosmartideas.com

It will be possible to save money on electricity bills by making the wise choice of your supplier, so some research on your part can be beneficial.

Green Committee Meetings:
